There’s something satisfying about getting three estimates for a remodeling project, lining them up, and seeing one number that’s noticeably lower than the others.
It can feel like an easy decision.
But when it comes to remodeling, the lowest bid isn’t always the lowest cost.
Are You Really Comparing the Same Project?
Two contractors can look at the exact same kitchen, bathroom, basement, or exterior project and hand you estimates that are thousands of dollars apart.
That doesn’t necessarily mean one contractor is charging too much.
Often, it means the estimates include very different things.
One proposal may account for permits, quality materials, detailed prep work, cleanup, project management, and realistic allowances for finishes.
Another may leave some of those things out, or include allowances that aren’t realistic for the products you actually want.
The number at the bottom may look better at first, but those differences have a way of showing up later.
Look Beyond the Bottom Line
Before choosing a contractor based on price, take a closer look at what you’re actually getting.
Is the scope of work detailed?
You should be able to understand what work is—and isn’t—included.
Are the allowances realistic?
A low allowance for cabinets, countertops, fixtures, flooring, or tile can make an estimate look attractive until you begin making selections.
Who is managing the project?
Someone needs to coordinate trades, materials, schedules, inspections, and all the moving pieces that come with remodeling.
How will changes be handled?
Sometimes homeowners decide to change something, and sometimes an unexpected condition is discovered once work begins. You should know how those situations will be communicated, approved, and priced.
What happens when you have a question?
Communication might not have a line item on an estimate, but it can make an enormous difference in your remodeling experience.

A Good Estimate Should Give You Clarity
No contractor can promise that a remodeling project will never uncover a surprise. Homes, especially older ones, occasionally have things hiding behind walls that no one could reasonably see beforehand.
But a thorough planning process can eliminate many surprises before construction begins.
And when something unexpected does happen, you shouldn’t be left wondering:
What happened? What does this mean? How much will it cost? What happens next?
You deserve clear answers.
The Right Question Isn’t Just “How Much?”
Price matters. Of course it does.
But when you’re comparing remodeling proposals, there’s another question worth asking: “What am I actually getting for this price?”
At 3R Home Services, we believe homeowners should understand what they’re agreeing to before construction begins. That means thoughtful planning, a clearly defined scope, quality craftsmanship, consistent communication, and someone guiding the project from beginning to end.
Because the goal isn’t simply to give you the lowest number.
It’s to give you a home you love, and an experience you can feel good about along the way.
